Welcome to the Word Formation Lab! 🧪✨

Hey there! I’m so happy to have you here today. I know that seeing a text full of gaps and weird capital letters on the side can look scary, but listen to me: Word Formation is actually one of the best parts of the exam! Why? Because it’s like a puzzle, and once you know the rules, you can solve it every time. 😊

In this lesson, we are going to dive deep into Part 3 of the Reading and Use of English section. By the time we finish, you will know:

  • ✅ Exactly what the task involves.
  • ✅ How to spot the most common traps.
  • ✅ A step-by-step strategy to find the right word.
  • ✅ The essential "word families" you need to memorize.

With a bit of training, you'll be doing this with your eyes closed (well, maybe keep them open for the exam!). Let's get started! 🚀

The Mission: What is Part 3? 🔍

In Part 3, you are given a short text with 8 gaps. At the end of some lines, there is a root word in capital letters. Your mission is to change that word so it fits the sentence perfectly.

Real Exam Example (2022):

Let's look at the first question of this text about Garlic (yes, the vegetable! 🧄):

An incredible vegetable China is currently the largest (17) ................ of garlic, which is (17) PRODUCT particularly associated with the dishes of northern Africa...

You can't just write "product" in the gap. You have to transform it! Is it a noun? An adjective? A person? That's what we are going to learn today! 🧠

For questions 17 – 24, read the text below. Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line. There is an example at the beginning (0).

Write your answers IN CAPITAL LETTERS on the separate answer sheet.

An incredible vegetable

Garlic, a member of the Liliacaea family which also includes onions, is (0) ……... COMMON used in cooking all around the world. China is currently the largest (17) ……... PRODUCT of garlic, which is particularly associated with the dishes of northern Africa and southern Europe. It is native to central Asia and has long had a history as a health-giving food, used both to prevent and cure (18) ................ ILL. In Ancient Egypt, workers building the pyramids were given garlic to keep them strong, while Olympic athletes in Greece ate it to increase their resistance to infection.

The forefather of antibiotic medicine, Louis Pasteur, claimed garlic was as (19) …….... EFFECT as penicillin in treating infections. Modern-day (20)............. have proved that garlic can indeed kill bacteria and even some viruses, so it can be very useful for people who have coughs and colds. In (21) …….... SCIENCE, some doctors believe that garlic can reduce blood (22) …….... ADD

The only (23) ............. ADVANTAGE to this truly amazing food is that the strong and rather (24) ............ SPICE smell of garlic is not the most pleasant!

Watch Out! Common Traps 🪤🚫

Even the best students fall into these traps. If you know they exist, you can jump over them!

  • The "Spelling" Monster: In Part 3, if you miss one single letter, you get 0 marks. Double-check words like accommodation or successful! ✍️
  • The "Negative" Ninja: Sometimes the word fits perfectly as an adjective, but the sentence actually needs the negative form (e.g., happy vs unhappy). Read the whole context!
  • Plural Panic: You found the right noun, but is it one or many? If the sentence says "Many (SCIENCE)...", the answer is scientists (plural!), not just scientist. 👥
  • Changing too little: Sometimes you need both a prefix AND a suffix (e.g., comfortuncomfortable).
  • Poor Time Management: Many students spend too long reading the text from start to finish. You need to scan.
Don't let these "sneaky" mistakes take your points away! 🕵️‍♀️

Your Strategy for Victory 🏆

When you sit down to do Part 3, follow these steps to stay organized and calm:

  1. Read the whole text first: Don't look at the gaps yet! Just understand the story. Is it positive? Negative? Past or present? 📖
  2. Identify the Part of Speech: Look at the words around the gap. If you see an article (the, a), you probably need a noun. If it's before a noun, you need an adjective.
  3. Transform & Check Meaning: Create the new word. Then, ask yourself: "Does the sentence need a negative meaning?" 🔄
  4. The Spelling Check: Write it clearly. If you are doing the paper exam, use CAPITAL LETTERS. It makes it easier for the examiner to read! 📝
  5. Reread: Read the full sentence with your new word. Does it sound like natural English? 🌊

Let's Solve Question 17! 🤝🧄

Remember our example about China and garlic?

"China is currently the largest (17) ................ of garlic..." (ROOT: PRODUCT)

Step-by-Step Logic:

  • 1. Analyze the context: We see the words "the largest". This is usually followed by a noun.
  • 2. What kind of noun? We are talking about a country (China) that grows/makes garlic. We need a word for a person or thing that "produces".
  • 3. Transform: From the verb Produce or the noun Product, we can form PRODUCER.
  • 4. Check Plurality: Is China one or many? One. So "producer" stays singular.
  • 5. Final Answer: PRODUCER.

Success! You just earned your first mark! 🎉

The Ultimate Word Formation Mega-Toolbox 🧰💎

Welcome to the "Big League," my dear students! If you master this slide, you are basically halfway to your B2 certificate. Word Formation isn't about memorizing 10,000 words; it's about understanding Word Families.

🚀 Advanced Strategies for Part 3

  • The "Slot" Technique: Look at the gap. Is it between an adjective and a verb? It’s probably a Noun. Is it at the start of a sentence followed by a comma? It’s almost certainly an Adverb.
  • Internal Changes: Some words don't just take a suffix; they change inside! (e.g., Long → Length, Strong → Strength, Deep → Depth).
  • Compound Words: Occasionally, you might need to combine words or use prefixes like under-, over-, or out- (e.g., Estimate → Overestimate).

Here is your Master List. I recommend studying 5 to 10 of these every day. Let's build those muscles! 💪
