B1 Preliminary Reading · Exam Instructions

1. Before You Start the Reading Paper 📝

Before we practise Part 5, let’s understand the official exam rules. This helps you work calmly, manage your time and avoid mistakes that have nothing to do with your real English level.

⏱️ Time

You have 45 minutes for the complete Reading paper.

🔢 Total questions

The Reading paper has 32 questions in total.

✅ Marks

Questions 1–32 carry one mark each.

📌 Part 5

Part 5 has 6 questions: Questions 21–26.

Official candidate instructions

  • Do not open the question paper until you are told to do so.
  • Write your name, centre number and candidate number on your answer sheet.
  • Read the instructions for each part carefully.
  • Answer all the questions.
  • Read the instructions on the answer sheet.
  • Write your answers on the answer sheet. Use a pencil.
  • You must complete the answer sheet within the time limit.
  • At the end of the test, hand in both the question paper and your answer sheet.

Paper-based and digital-based exams: in the paper-based version, you mark your answers on an answer sheet using pencil. In the digital-based version, you select your answers on screen. The skill is the same: understand the text, analyse the gap, compare the options and choose the word that fits grammatically and meaningfully.

Teacher tip: Part 5 is a multiple-choice cloze. This means the missing words are not random: each gap tests vocabulary, grammar, collocation or meaning in context.

Lesson Introduction

2. Welcome! Today We Are Going to Master Reading Part 5 🌟

Hello, my lovely students! Today we are going to practise Part 5 of the Cambridge B1 Preliminary Reading paper. This is the part where you read a text with gaps and choose the correct word from four options. 😊

I know this exercise can feel confusing because sometimes all the options look similar. But please do not worry. With enough training, you will learn to check the words before and after the gap, recognise collocations and choose the answer that fits the meaning of the sentence.

What are we going to do in this lesson?

🧩 Understand the task

We will learn what Cambridge asks you to do in Reading Part 5.

📖 Analyse a real text

We will use the official text called The Coconut Tree.

🚫 Avoid common traps

We will see why some words are grammatically possible but wrong in context.

✅ Solve step by step

We will solve Question 21 with a clear method you can repeat in the exam.

In this lesson, I want you to stop guessing only by “what sounds good”. In Part 5, we need to check meaning + grammar + collocation. Once you learn this method, the exercise becomes much safer. 💪✨

Reading Part 5 · Real Exam Task

3. What Do You Have to Do in Part 5? 🧩

Important: do not choose a word only because you know it. The correct answer must fit the sentence, the grammar and the natural English collocation.

Examiner Secrets

4. Problems and Common Mistakes in B1 Reading Part 5 🚫

Part 5 is dangerous because all four options usually belong to the same general topic. But only one word fits naturally in the sentence.

1. Translating from Spanish

Students sometimes translate directly and choose a word that sounds possible in Spanish, but not in English. English depends a lot on collocations.

2. Ignoring the words around the gap

In Part 5, the words before and after the gap are essential. For example, hot and wet ____ creates a natural phrase.

3. Choosing the most familiar word

Maybe you know the word weather, but that does not mean it is correct. You must check meaning and usage.

4. Forgetting collocations

Some words naturally go together in English: hot and wet climate, provide shade, take a look.

Common Spanish-speaking student mistakes

ProblemExampleHow to fix it
Confusing weather and climate“Weather” is daily; “climate” is general long-term conditions.Use climate for places and general environmental conditions.
Choosing by translation“Condition” may sound like “condición”, but it does not fit naturally here.Check if the full phrase sounds natural in English.
Ignoring collocationsStudents may say “provide shadow” instead of “provide shade”.Learn common word combinations as chunks.
Not reading the whole sentenceThe answer often depends on the full sentence, not just the gap.Read before and after the gap before choosing.

Teacher tip: in Part 5, ask yourself: Does this word fit naturally with the words around it? If the answer is no, it is probably a trap. 💛

Reading Strategy

5. Tips for Success and Strategies 🌟

Here is the method I want you to use every time you solve Reading Part 5. This method helps you stop guessing and start choosing with evidence.

The 6-Step Reading Part 5 Strategy ⚡

  1. Read the title first. It gives you the general topic.
  2. Read the whole text quickly. Understand the main idea before answering.
  3. Look at the words before and after the gap. This helps you identify grammar and collocation.
  4. Decide what type of word you need. Noun, verb, adjective, adverb or fixed phrase?
  5. Compare the four options. Do not choose the first word that sounds familiar.
  6. Put the word back into the sentence and reread it. It must sound natural and make sense.

For Question 21, what are we looking for?

ClueWhat it tells usWhat we need
“found by the sea”We are talking about where coconut trees grow.A word about environmental conditions in a place.
“hot and wet”These adjectives describe a general type of environment.A noun that collocates with “hot and wet”.
Sentence meaningCoconut trees grow in places with certain long-term conditions. The best word is about long-term weather patterns.

My advice: in Part 5, do not think only “Do I know this word?” Think: Does this word complete the sentence naturally? 🧠

Real Exam Solution

6. Solving Step by Step – Example from the Real Exam ✅

Now let’s solve Question 21 together. Remember: the correct word must fit both the grammar and the meaning of the sentence.

Question 21: The sentence

The coconut tree is thought to be one of the most valuable trees in the world. It is mostly found by the sea where there is a hot and wet (21) ………….

Step 1: Understand the sentence

The sentence explains where coconut trees usually grow. We need a word that describes the general environmental conditions of a place.

Step 2: Check the options

OptionMeaningWhy it is correct or wrongResult
A. temperatureHow hot or cold something is“Hot and wet temperature” is not natural. Temperature only refers to heat, not wetness.Wrong
B. conditionA state or situationWe usually use the plural “conditions” for environment, not “a hot and wet condition”.Wrong
C. climateThe typical weather conditions of a place over a long time“A hot and wet climate” is natural and matches the meaning perfectly.Correct
D. weatherThe conditions on a particular day or short periodWeather changes daily. The sentence is about the general environment where coconut trees grow.Wrong

Step 3: Put the answer back into the text

It is mostly found by the sea where there is a hot and wet climate.

This sounds natural and makes sense because coconut trees grow in places with warm, humid long-term environmental conditions.

Correct answer: C ✅

The correct answer is C. climate. The phrase hot and wet climate is a natural English collocation.

Teacher tip: remember this difference: weather is today or this week. climate is the typical weather of a place over a long time.

Teacher tip: after every Part 5 exercise, create a list of the correct collocations. Cambridge often tests natural English, not just dictionary meanings. 🧠

Conclusion

8. Final Advice: Never Leave an Answer Blank 🌈

My dear students, please remember this: never leave a Reading answer blank. Cambridge tells you to answer all the questions, so give yourself every possible chance.

How many marks is Part 5 worth?

The Reading paper has 32 questions, and Questions 1–32 carry one mark each.

Part 5 has 6 questions, Questions 21–26, so this part is worth 6 marks out of 32.

That means every gap matters. Even if you are not completely sure, choose the option that fits best with the grammar, meaning and collocation. A blank answer has no chance, but a careful answer might be correct.

Final teacher tips 💛

  • Read the title first to understand the topic.
  • Read the whole text quickly before answering.
  • Look at the words before and after each gap.
  • Ask yourself what type of word is needed.
  • Check collocations, not only translations.
  • Put the answer back into the sentence and reread it.
  • Answer every question. Do not leave blanks.

Remember this ❤️

You do not need to know every word to succeed in Reading Part 5. You need to read the context, recognise natural word combinations and choose carefully. With practice, you will become faster, calmer and much more accurate.
